When Hailey Bieber stepped out onto the famous stairs of the Met Gala with her retro flipped ponytail by Celebrity Hairstyle Jan Atkin, hairstylists across the globe designed their version of the 90's hairstyle to a modern revamp.
Where did the flipped out ends hairstyle originate from?
The flipped out ends were iconically the signature look for Jackie Kennedy in the 1960's with voluminous bouffants on top.
The 90's ponytail with side swept fringe
The 90's era saw a more modern take of a sleek ponytail with perfectly polished ends. The ponytails featured bounce and the ends were either bent out with curling iron or under for a more old Hollywood feel.
Lately this trend has been dominate on celebrities featured on the red carpet as the hair is smoothed to perfection with high shine products. The style has been creating buzz from being seen on celebrities including Kim Kardashian West, Bella Hadid and Jennifer Lopez with versions of half-up half-down ponytails, deep side swept fringes and slicked back. This hairstyle trend is perfect for adding in hair accessories like bows, barrettes and headbands.
To create a high pony start by sectioning off the top section, with a grooming brush firmly sweep hair up into the position and band. Then with the section underneath, brush the hair up to the top section, hairspring as you go to create a polished pony. By separating the pony into to it elevates bumps and allows you to be in more control of the hair in your sections. To flip the ends, work in small sections from underneath and flip the ends out like you would with a round brush.
Let's take a look at the trend from the gram.
